Write Someone Other than Yourself

So many of my main characters are the same. Most of the characters in books I read are the same, too. I’m talking about personality. Maybe I’m drawn toward books whose protagonists are similar in personality to me, but maybe most authors are similar in personality. I’m challenging myself to write a story whose main character is different. If I could get the personalities of my sister and best friend right, they would be awesome main characters for a story. I’m not sure I have that in me.

I do have one character I just developed who is a bit different from my usual. She’s brusque and self-confident, a little disdainful of others, and has learned to look out for her own interests topmost. The challenge I see then is how to make her accessible to readers.

Happy Writing!
